Work in depth

Two engagements. Two very different challenges. The same discipline: audience-centered strategy, intentional language, and narrative that actually moves people.

Case Study 02

Faith-Based
Mental Health Initiative

Audience Research · Messaging Strategy · University Partnership

A university-led mental health initiative sought to better understand what created openness to professional mental health support within Black church communities. The work explored how pastors and congregants spoke about trust, stigma, spiritual belief, and help-seeking, and how language influenced willingness to engage with professional support.

Audience Research Focus Groups Messaging Strategy Narrative Strategy
What the work included
—Focus group facilitation with pastors and congregants
—Audience insight synthesis and behavioral pattern analysis
—Messaging intelligence and language guidance
—Cultural and spiritual framing strategy
—Strategic communications recommendations for future outreach
Community listening session

Listening sessions with pastors and congregants in Black church communities.

Key research findings
● Participants responded more powerfully to personal testimony than clinical messaging alone
● Trust increased significantly when providers demonstrated cultural familiarity and community presence
● Many participants viewed mental health as both a medical and spiritual issue. Messaging that honored both performed better
● Specific language choices strongly influenced willingness to seek support
● Relational credibility and confidentiality were prerequisites to engagement, not outcomes of it
What partners say

In their
own words.

From crisis communications to three-year event narrative partnerships. The people who've been in the work speak to it best.

“

We knew what we wanted people to feel. Harold helped us build a program that made them feel it, and our best night of fundraising followed. Our team is really good at going one to one with people. But we were trying to bring our mission to the masses, and that's a lot harder to convey from stage. That's where Harold came in, bringing all those puzzle pieces together, and turning what we knew one to one into something that could land at scale.

“

Earlier in my career, I worked with Harold and his team at Cardigan, and they treated our employee communication with the rigor most firms reserve for the customer-facing work. Harold understood who we were before he wrote a word, and gave us recruiting messaging that finally sounded like us, instead of like every other company making the same promises.

When our organization found itself navigating a fast-moving social media issue with significant public attention, Harold stepped in immediately to help our leadership team respond thoughtfully and strategically. What stood out most was not just the speed of the work, but the calmness, clarity, and strategic judgment he brought to the situation. Harold helped us feel supported, prepared, and aligned at a moment when timing and tone mattered tremendously.
